The government has granted a National Insurance Contributions (NICs) holiday for new businesses, which have less than ten members on their staff. The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) hopes that the holiday would be extended to existing enterprises too. According to research in the third quarter of 2010 the number of businesses looking for new staff was 12.2%. However, this number fell to 8.7% by the fourth quarter. The FSB reported that 44% of SMEs intend to decrease the number of workers on their payroll if the National Insurance is not cut by the government. It is important that businesses are supported by the government and in turn this would help improve the unemployment in the country.
